There’s nothing like a Christmas story – and the story of Spode’s gorgeous Christmas Tree pattern began sixty-three years ago. In 1938, Harold Holdway, a young designer in Spode’s England office, was asked to design a new Christmas pattern, especially for the American market. But Harold had never seen a Christmas Tree, and was completely unfamiliar with American traditions! In his first sketches, the presents were actually suspended from the branches of the tree, until he was told that the American tradition was to place gifts under the tree, not in it!
Despite those few initial setbacks, Spode’s Christmas Tree pattern has become an English Christmas tradition. Collectors all over the world treasure Christmas Tree for its traditional style, reminiscent of a bygone era. Since 1938, the pattern has remained the same – a true Spode Classic. And it’s all thanks to Harold.
